1914 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner #68 PSA EX 5 - Pop Two, Three Higher. He was the longtime shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates whose career in the Steel City spanned from 1900 to 1917. His name was Honus Wagner and he was a gifted hitter who compiled a lifetime batting average of .328. He also collected plenty of personal hardware along the way as he secured eight NL batting titles. To cap off his impressive résumé, which included 3,420 hits, Wagner led the Pirates to the franchise's first World Series crown in 1909 by beating Ty Cobb's AL Champion Detroit Tigers, four game to three. And while his famed 1909 T206 card still generates plenty of hobby headlines, another cardboard gem from yesteryear is being offered in this lot.
Presented is a very rare 1914 Cracker Jack card that provides a side profile image of "The Flying Dutchman" as his Hall of Fame career was winding down. Part of a set that boasts 144 subjects, card #68 featuring Wagner was a very popular one for kids who needed their fill of the Cracker Jack sweet that consisted of molasses-flavored, caramel-coated pop corn. Because of that original setting, finding any of the cards in high-grade fashion from more than 110 years ago is definitely a dream come true. This specific specimen exhibits deep, rich color, little to no surface wear, solid centering, four good corners and a clean reverse. The card, which shows Wagner just three years away from retirement, is a popular issue that would make an outstanding addition to any Cracker Jack collection. Graded PSA EX 5. Of the 51 examples found in the PSA Pop Report, this is one of only two cards graded EXCELLENT with just three rated higher.
