8-pages of publisher's ads, original gray buckram cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red, bottom edge of sheets untrimmed. 1st edition, third impression. Linklater's first collection of short fiction, a mixed collection of stories, including several excellent supernatural tales. Linklater is often praised for the light touch he brings to material that, at the same time, feels substantial and satisfying. The title story here is an ironic modern fairy tale about a medieval storyteller, a scoundrel who pursues only beautiful women, taking pity on them because God likes the plain ones.
