An excellent biographical reference work on one of America's most noted Shakespearean actresses of the 19th century stage. Filled with many halftone photographs of Ms. Marlowe in her roles.....Julia Marlowe (1865 – 1950). An early biographer described her as "of medium height, slender and frail of aspect, with a pale and rather sallow face, Great, dark, and wistful eyes, a head that seemed too big for her body, beautiful dark-brown hair." Marlowe was born Sarah Frances Frost in England. At age four her family emigrated to the US. Her father "fled to America in 1870 under the erroneous impression that he had destroyed a neighbor's eye by flicking a whip at him during a race. He changed his name to Brough. Marlowe made her Broadway debut in 1895, she went on to appear in more than 70 Broadway productions. Her first husband was Broadway actor Robert Taber. Their marriage lasted from 1894–1900. According to many who knew her, Marlowe sacrificed her own self-interests many times in order to promote Taber's career, however, professional jealousy ended their marriage. Marlowe soon became financially independent. The New York Sun wrote of her, "There is not a woman player in America or in England that is – attractively considered – fit to unlace her shoe". Her second marriage was to E.H. Sothern. Marlowe and their company crossed the Atlantic to play in London. They were unable to attract audiences in England, however, and returned to America after a season. Most of her later career was in Shakespearean roles co-starring with her second husband, Sothern. Illness forced a temporary retirement in 1915, and when she was hurt in an accident in 1924, she retired permanently . After Sothern's death in 1933, Marlowe became somewhat of a recluse. White haired and still beautiful she'd occasionally visited close friends. Marlowe died in 1950 in NYC at the age of 84. She had no children.
