1998 SkyBox E-X 2001 Ken Griffey Jr. (Essential Credentials Now) #10 PSA Mint 9 - #'d 4/10, Pop Two, None Superior! It's been called Junior's best baseball card, even though only a scant few collectors have had the opportunity to see one in the flesh. Just ten of these ultra-rarities were inserted into 1998 SkyBox packs and this is number four of that limited edition, stamped in silver on card verso. It may not be immediately apparent from our catalog imagery, but the part of the card bearing the printed text on card obverse is transparent green material, which then gives way to solid green and sparkling gold as the eye moves right. Even by today's standards, this is cutting-edge trading card technology, but in 1998 this was absolutely mind-blowing design.
We should keep in mind that Griffey, Jr. was at the peak of his fame when this card was issued, as reigning American League MVP. He'd just about duplicate his staggering slugging figures in 1998 with fifty-six home runs and 146 RBI's, good enough for a fourth-place MVP finish and his sixth of seven career Silver Sluggers. Joining DiMaggio and Mays in the conversation for the most effective and majestic outfielder, he'd likewise claim his ninth of ten career Gold Gloves in 1998.
Just four of these cards have been slabbed by PSA, and this specimen shares top billing with one other at PSA Mint 9. Limited edition - #4/10.
