Fr. 1166h $100 1870 Gold Face Proof One of Two KnownFr. 1166h Hessler 1223 $100 1870 Gold Certificate Face Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64. Gene Hessler listed this $100 Gold Certificate design on page 219 of the second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes. He had seen only one example of this Face Proof and it is not the example in this lot as the plated Hessler Proof has a penned "1273" in the bottom margin at center. Therefore, we believe the population figure for Hessler 1223 is two. The example in this lot was printed on India paper and mounted on broad margined bonded paper measuring overall approximately ten by nine inches. Thomas Hart Benjamin's portrait is at left that was also used on the later Series of 1875, 1882, and 1922 $100 Gold Certificates. Six-digit all zero serial numbers were perforated at lower left and upper right. Space for the penned signatures of the Register of the Treasury and Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. are at lower right. Another penned signature space for the Assistant Treasurer, N.Y. is at lower left. This would not have been Thomas C. Acton as he was the Superintendent of the New York Assay Office until 1875.
