I created this piece during the entirety of my chemotherapy.
My take on "Nostalgia" is about realizing that everything we thought mattered doesn't have much merit in the face of an impending death, and in the end, the only thing left with us is our memories.
This charcoal painting is done on arches 300 gsm hot-pressed watercolor paper. If I remember correctly, it took me seven months to finish this piece because I was having such a hard time with the side effects of chemo and adjusting how the painting would look (like the angle of the rose or the overall lighting) since I took a bunch of reference pictures and real-time details that I added to my piece.
Intricate shading and highly detailed textures convey realism, accentuating deep wrinkles, delicate raindrops, and an expressive rose. The monochromatic tones create depth and evoke introspection and a sense of contemplation.
