One of Eleven Collectible Fr. 165 Spread Eagle $100sFr. 165 $100 1862 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 20.
If a "short list" of America's most coveted paper money designs were published, the "Spread Eagle" on the $100 Legals would likely be right behind the likes of the Grand Watermelon, Technicolor and Educational Series notes. Only 13 examples of Fr. 165 are documented in Track & Price, two of which are off the market due to being in the collections of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Smithsonian Institution. To date, only a PMG Very Fine 25 example exceeds the present offering in grade and it has not been heard from since we auctioned it in September 2007. PMG has commented about a restoration, which is minor and typical for early Legals since the thin paper had a tendency to chip and split at its edges. Serial number 45406-B in this lot was first reported to the numismatic community at large by Jack Fisher in November 1989. Mr. Fisher was a collector and researcher who was a prolific writer for the Bank Note Reporter in the 1980s-90s. This Fr. 165 was last offered in October 2022 when it crossed our auction block to the tune of $96,000. It is the finest example of this Friedberg number to appear at auction since a PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20 was offered in 2012. This is an opportunity to add a significant piece to your collection.
