One of 11 Known - High Grade Type RarityFr. 172 $100 1880 Legal Tender PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. The Series 1880 $100 Silver Certificates commenced with those issued during Blanche K. Bruce and James Gilfillan's joint May 1881 to March 1883 tenure. They were in office for less than two years, leaving few notes issued for this first emission that has been designated by the Friedbergs as Fr. 172. While eleven examples are known, three are permanently part of institutional collections. The paper here is bold, with deep, original colors for the seal and serial numbers. This comes from a small run of five high grade pieces that were amazingly spared destruction, each of which is incredible and well margined. By way of comparison, a PMG Gem 65 EPQ example realized $288,000 three years ago.
